Speak to The Rock; Are we walking over details?

I’ve never been enthused by rocks. I know people who walk the shore line for hours looking for a specific color, texture, shape, and size. I’m just not one of those people.

However, last week during my afternoon walk, I walked by a woman shuffling her fingers through the rocks. As I smiled to say hello she stopped me, lifting the rock in her hand closer for me to see she said, “isn’t it amazing the details that one rock can have.” She was quick to point out the heart shaped pattern embedded into one stone and ringlet features of another. I thought about how many times I’ve walked over those rocks, unenthused by their details.

There’s a story in Numbers chapter 20 when the Israelites are worn, tired, and desperate for water. God tells Moses to speak to the rock. If Moses just speaks to the rock, Moses will bring water out of the rock for the community so they and their livestock can drink. (Numbers 20:8B)

Moses however, decides to hit the rock instead. Instantly water begins to flow EVEN THOUGH Moses did not do what God had asked Him to do. Because of this moment, Moses doesn’t get to inherit the Promise Land for Himself and still God provides.

But lately I have been wondering why God asked Moses to speak to the rock? Don’t move it, don’t hit it, don’t try to change it, just speak to it.

As I walked away from that woman a new revelation entered my spirit. Slow down, pay attention, speak to The Rock (Numbers 20:8) and don’t discount the details. This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. (1 John 5:14) Be strong and take courage because God is striding ahead of you. He’s right there with you. He won’t let you down and He won’t leave you. (Deuteronomy 31:6) Don’t be afraid to speak the details to The Rock Himself.
